For the BBQ (July 7). Songs from your High School Days.
The music club has really being stepping it up as of late with the quality of the selections and how they adhere to the theme. This looks to continue with the next round of music club themes. There are some dandy’s. Some will require a fair bit of thought. Some of them have been talked about for a long time, and they are finally going to happen.
Guilty Pleasures: A guilty pleasure is something one enjoys and considers pleasurable despite feeling guilt for enjoying it. The “guilt” involved is sometimes simply fear of others discovering one’s lowbrow or otherwise embarrassing tastes. Fashion, video games, music, movies, and junk food can be examples of guilty pleasures. We’ve talked about it for a long time and now we are doing something about it. Bring in the music that you crank when nobody else is around.
Gender Bender: Gender bender is an informal term used to refer to a person who actively transgresses, or “bends,” expected gender roles. Gender bending is sometimes a form of social activism undertaken in response to assumptions or over-generalisations about genders. Some gender benders identify with the gender assigned them at birth, but challenge the norms of that gender through androgynous behavior and atypical gender roles. Gender benders may self-identify as transgender or genderqueer, feeling that the gender assigned to them at their birth is an inaccurate or incomplete description of themselves; some are transsexual and desire to change their physical sex through hormone therapy or sex reassignment surgery, while others were born intersexual. So bring guys that sound like girls or girls that sound like guys or guys that dress like girls or vice versa.
Style From a Hat: In September each of us will draw a musical style from a hat. At the November meeting you will have to play a selection of songs that represent the musical style that you drew. You may have to step out of your comfort zone for this. Metal, jazz, blues, rap, electronica, country. We will make the list and draw in september. We may avoid rock and pop as musical styles.
Conversations With Song Titles: On the TV show “Whose Line is it Anyway?” there was a game where the performers could speak to each other using only song titles from existing songs. We will do something similar where yo have to create a conversation using only song titles.
Best of 2011: Bring in your favorite music that you heard for the first time in 2011.
Percussion: A percussion instrument is any object which produces a sound when hit with an implement, shaken, rubbed, scraped, or by any other action which sets the object into vibration. The term usually applies to an object used in a rhythmic context or with musical intent. In this theme we will play music where percussion instruments are a major part of the song.
Disaster Songs: Songs about disasters.
Songs for Your Funeral: Songs that you would like played a t your funeral. “Another One Bites the Dust” has been banned.
Album or Artist Spotlight: You bring in 5 songs from an album or artist that you would like to raise awareness of to the other music club members.
Soundtrack to Your Movie:You make up a movie in your mind and then provide the soundtrack to it. Set the scene. Play the music. It could be a simple love story or something more complex.
